Washington DC – August 21, 2013 – About ten years ago, the Washington DC area Tamil enthusiasts formed an informal study group to explore the literary treasures of their mother tongue Tamil. Over the past ten years they continued to meet on a bi-weekly basis in Maryland’s Howard County public libraries and systematically studied the Tamil literature. Their enthusiasm for Tamil literature has encouraged the formation of similar study groups in Houston, TX and San Francisco, CA.
This group of Tamil enthusiasts studied the most famous Tamil book known as Thirukkural which is considered as the handbook of Tamil culture and heritage. In 2005 they conducted an International Conference on Thirukkural for which there was an overwhelming response from the Tamil Community. Recently, this group of Tamil enthusiasts has completed their study of Purananuru. Purananuru is one of the well known Tamil classics, consisting of four hundred poems describing the various aspects of the Tamil culture and civilization that existed 2000 years ago. Purananuru also provides valuable information on the history of the Tamil people.
To celebrate their success of the study of Purananuru and to promote it among the Tamil diaspora, they are hosting an International Conference on Purananuru with the support of the Tamil Sangam of Greater Washington and the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA).
This conference will be held during August 31, 2013 – September 1, 2013 at the Montgomery College Cultural arts center, 7995 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
A famous scholar once said, “Purananuru is the identity of the Tamil people”. This Conference will provide an outstanding opportunity for the Tamil community in North America to understand and appreciate Purananuru, a masterpiece in Tamil classical literature.
